“Lots of folks like to critique movies with an is it racist/sexist-first mentality.
This movie is a good example of where that falls flat.
This movie could be done almost the same with a gang of any nationality, and making that change wouldn’t necessarily improve the movie. Do it the same but with white human trafficking in North Dakota, pretty much the same movie results.
It’s not a case of good movie, but I took issue with some of the ways I interpreted race being portrayed. It’s just not very good, and if you want to lay on top of that your perceptions of Mexico’s portrayal in the movie, go right ahead, but it’s the easy way out.”
