“One, I like that this book proves, scientifically, probably empirically if I know that word well enough to use it, that spiders take pleasure in ruining human lives.
Two, Frank’s leg was apparently pulled off by some other asshole spider while Frank was asleep. This is disturbing on many levels. Why did it not wake Frank to have his leg pulled off? Will this other spider continue to remove Frank’s limbs until Frank has no legs, at which point I would agree with the book’s question: is Frank still a spider? And if nobody catches this guy, will he strike again?
Also, if my leg was pulled off in the night, I think it’d take me a while to get to “am I still a man?” I feel there’s an essential “What the hell happened to my leg?” stage in there. Frank is adaptable, I’ll give him that. Rather than fretting about the leg, he moves on. Meanwhile, a leg-puller-offer remains in plain sight, biding his time until he can strike again.
Overall, an important message received. Either about overcoming adversity or regarding the total inadequacy of the spider justice system. “
