I know I said I’d plan to make regular donations to the arts this year, and I guess I still see this as one.
One of my favorite podcasts, The Flop House, is hosting a donation campaign for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This is partially in response to a letter they received in their regular mailbag. A listener wrote in with some sad news about a loved one, and talked about how The Flop House had helped his departed loved one at times.
The Flop House regulars, all hilarious and awesome, took a moment to talk about their own dark times, which came at different intervals, and to relate a bit while still sending a message about helping people get help.
It’s rare when a podcast this funny gets serious, but I found what they said to be really true, heartfelt, and kind.
I’ll say that podcasts, The Flop House and others, have helped me through some of the toughest times in my life. Sad times, they gave me a laugh. When I wasn’t ready to laugh, it was nice to hear my friends (I call podcasters my friends even if it’s creepy and they don’t know me at all, fuck it) laugh. There are a lot of voices out there that have comforted me so many times. There are shows I’ve listened to two or three times over because, well, I needed them.
If you’ve got a spare dollar, consider donating to this cause. Whether you’re doing it for The Flop House, to help AFSP, or because I asked you too. That last one is the dumbest reason, by the way, but we’ll allow it.
