Thoughts Upon Seeing a New, $200,000 Piece of Equipment at Work

That’s it?

Remember that story where John Henry raced the stem engine?  I think the steam engine beat him, but I feel like the moral would be different if he won by a shitload and also could be paid for 23 years (real calculation) for the cost of the machine.  Just saying.

You know how in movies the evil computer always becomes sentient and takes over the world?  How come they always become a genius?  Maybe there are some machines that become sentient but are unfortunately only given the mental powers of a grandma with severe dementia who was pretty dopey to begin with.

I’ve always felt that design was a compromise between form and function, the less functional, the more beautiful.  So you would think this thing would be goddamn gorgeous, downright fuckable.

If someone did the same amount of work that this machine did, at the same pace, they would be fired and shouted at in front of either their family or a gathering of former loves, depending on schedules.

Our old system relied on stickers that communicated information to a machine.  Then we spent a couple million for a new system where stickers communicate information to a machine.  I’m beginning to fear that I’m not missing something and that this was the actual plan with documents, spreadsheets, and so on.
