“The Contortionist’s Handbook”

“I’m re-reading Craig Clevenger in anticipation of his FIRST NEW BOOK IN ALMOST 20 YEARS!

This shit holds up. I mean, it’s a story that doesn’t work the same way in the digital age, but that’s okay, it doesn’t have to, and that’d be like saying “This Charles Dickens book would be totally different if this dude had a cell phone.”

It’s not always a great idea to revisit stuff you love, but in this case, it worked out. And I don’t know how long the typical interval, the curve of forgetting is, for books, but I remembered very little, so I guess 20 years is a green light.

I once re-read a Vonnegut book, Sirens of Titan, without realizing it until the VERY end. Which I “predicted” because I somehow knew what was going to happen, and then was suspicious because I’m NOT that smart, and it turned out I’d read it before and forgot, but only MOSTLY, the big plot twist, I remembered.

But 20 years is my sweet spot. So I’m about due for another ride with Sirens of Titan…but the memory of accidentally reading it again kind of throws off the curve. Alas, it’ll have to be another 20 years.”
