“This movie, like The Goonies, is one I would like to go back in time and show myself when it came out. Because I don’t think you can watch this for the first time as an adult and be totally in love with it. It’s a bit of a mess. Nobody told the girl in the first scene she was in a movie. I think the two sisters both being dumb sort of hindered the movie. Why not make one, I don’t know, super mean? Or make them both dumb, and it’s almost like they’re in a contest of who can be dumber. The same thing, capturing the girl, happens twice. Oh, and a peeve of mine, how doe the sisters know to make jokes like, “Let me see your driving permit” when a couple hours ago they didn’t even know what a car was?
That said, complaints others have about the movie don’t bother me. Of course Bette is going to have a musical number. And it was fine. It’s not super long or self-indulgent. It kind of makes sense in the plot of the movie. And the movie still looks pretty good.
I think the sticky part is the plot. Way more complicated than it needs to be. It causes us to miss out on some fun. This movie could just be three witches running around and fucking shit up on Halloween instead of trying to capture a child (any child?) and steal that child’s essence or whatever?
Also, I think the remake of this should lean into the virginity aspect equally hard, but the main character should be like 25. Or 40. That’d be good stuff.
So, not my fave or anything, and I get why people really dig it. I can see the movie in here that other people see, it’s just not the first thing that hits me, know what I mean?”
